This religious and civil festivity dates back to ancient times.
Popular tradition refers this feast to more than 100 years’ ago, when the agro – pastoral culture still predominated in the village of Aritzo as the only source of income for the very large number of less affluent families.
The festivities in honor of the saint are held on the first Sunday of September, before the shepherds, resumed the route of seasonal transhumance of livestock ( in the case sheep) from the pastures of the Aritzo mountains to those of the Campidano plateau.
The festivities are organized by a spontaneous committee sponsored by the municipal administration according to a detailed program that includes the
procession of the saint through all the streets of the town center with the participation of the population in traditional Aritzese costume including men and women on horseback, followed by the Holy Mass celebrated in the parish church
.
At the conclusion of the religious festivities in the square of “S’Erriu” , “Su Pinnone” is organized, i.e., the cuccagna tree, which is followed by many other games such as the sack race The festive atmosphere is also represented by the performance of various folk groups from the various parts of Sardinia, in addition to the local folk group “Texile” .
